The default practice of most churches is to choose volunteers by willingness alone. We have an empty spot we must fill and we’re looking for anyone willing to fill it. We’re typically not thinking about what kind of role would suit this individual, our focus is on our organizational needs.
However, if most our church if most of our volunteers were chosen without any consideration of their passion or their gifting, then, over time, most of our volunteers will be serving in a role that they’re not passionate about or match their gifting. What will happen to our church if most people are doing things that they’re not really good at or care deeply about?

In rare churches, the volunteer recruitment and intake process is focused on the needs of the volunteer rather than the needs of the organization. In these churches great care is taken to place volunteers in roles that match their gifts and their passions.
