The Assimilation Process

Most churches shrink by 10% every year due to natural causes (i.e. death, sickness, people moving away, etc.). This means that you have to grow by 10% just in order to remain plateaued.

To calculate your visitor retention rate you have to follow this formula:
1. Take your average in-person Sunday attendance (including children).
2. Multiply that attendance number by two. This is how many first time visitors you should expect to have in the coming 12 months.
3. Now take that total number of first time visitors and divided it by the number of people your church grew by last year (measured by increase in average attendance). This is your retention rate.

For example. A church with an average attendance of 100 will typically have 200 first time visitors in a year. If the church grew by 10 people last year, then the church will have a 5% visitor retention rate.
